The Boy From Oz Lights Up the Q Theatre

Free Rain’s production of The Boy From Oz at the Q Theatre in Queanbeyan is delighting audiences with its vibrant and heartfelt tribute to one of Australia’s most beloved entertainers, Peter Allen.

This joyful juke-box musical, which was the first Australian musical to be staged on Broadway, captures the incredible highs and profound lows of Allen’s life, offering a moving celebration of his journey to international stardom as a singer-songwriter.

The story, framed by Allen’s greatest hits, follows his rise from humble beginnings. We first meet Allen as a child, performing in a local pub, and witness his early success as one half of the pop duo The Allen Brothers.

His life takes a dramatic turn when he meets Judy Garland during a tour in Hong Kong. Garland, recognizing Allen’s talent, brings him to New York, where he not only opens for her on tour but also meets and marries her daughter, Liza Minnelli. Their marriage ends amicably as Allen comes to terms with his sexuality, marking a pivotal moment in both his personal and professional life.

The Boy From Oz doesn’t shy away from the emotional depth of Allen’s life. It sensitively portrays the heartache he endured, including his father’s suicide and the death of his longtime partner Greg Connell to AIDS. Despite these tragic events, Allen’s resilience embodied the timeless showbiz motto, "the show must go on.”

From writing hit songs for other artists including Olivia Newton John and Dusty Springfield, to his triumphant performances at Radio City Music Hall with the Rockettes, Allen’s legacy shines through his unforgettable stage presence and in the music he produced.

This production’s success owes much to Jared Newall, whose charismatic portrayal of Allen captures both his flamboyance and vulnerability.

Newall, a seasoned performer, steps into a role previously made famous by Hugh Jackman and Todd McKenney, and he does so with flair. Alongside him, a talented local cast shines, including Mitchell Clement, who gives a touching performance as the young Peter Allen.

The musical features show-stopping numbers like "I Go to Rio" and our unofficial national anthem "I Still Call Australia Home," that cemented Peter Allen’s place in the hearts of audiences everywhere. If you love musicals, Australian pop music history, or just want a fun and uplifting night at the theatre, The Boy From Oz is not to be missed.
