The box office is making a comeback and it's time to get our and get back to the cinema. Here are our four favourite movies this summer!

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

The world was shocked and saddened by the 2021 death of Chadwick Boseman,  an actor who was just coming into his own, and public consciousness, thanks in large part to 2018’s Black Panther. Just how director Ryan Coogler and his cast (Angela Bassett, Lupita N’yongo, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke) recover from that loss remains to be seen. As the Wakandans strive to embrace their next chapter, the heroes must band together to forge a new path for their beloved kingdom. This sequel to the Oscar-winning and epic film promises to be just as big and bold as its predecessor.

She Said

Much like 2015 Oscar-winner Spotlight, She Said is about the nitty gritty  of investigative journalism in the service of justice. Where Spotlight dealt with paedophilia in the Catholic Church, She Said is about sexual abuse  in Hollywood. Two-time Academy Award nominee Carey Mulligan and  Zoe Kazan play New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor whose investigations eventually led to the fall of Hollywood producer  Harvey Weinstein; Maria Schrader’s film focusing on the duo’s efforts to  get Weinstein’s victims to go on the record.

Avatar: The Way of Water

It’s been a long time, but now thirteen years after the 3D juggernaut Avatar blitzed the international box office (US$2.8B) and the Oscars (3 wins from  9 nominations, including Best Picture), director James Cameron aims to do it again with this long-awaited sequel, the first of three. Pandora’s indigenous people, the Na’vi, continue their battle for existence against the invading humans, with the action centred this time in the ocean rather than the forests. Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana return in what, at the very least, promises to be a visually stunning film.

Bros

You may have heard that Bros, the “first” gay romcom by a studio, failed to set the US box office alight. And you’ve no doubt heard arguments from various people, including star and writer Billy Eichner (Billy on the Street; Difficult People), as to why that was. Too gay for straight audiences? Too straight for gay audiences? Too self-important for either? We’d suggest you find out for yourself as this film is definitely a bit of light fun, and we probably all need that right now. Director Nick Stoller’s cheeky film, which also stars Luke Macfarlane, certainly looks smart, funny and sexy.
