‘Titanique’ recently premiered at Sydney’s Grand Electric to a well-deserved ecstatic response from audiences. This off-Broadway musical sensation is an outrageously entertaining jukebox musical offering a razor-sharp send-up of James Cameron’s 1997 blockbuster film, ‘Titanic’. However, this re-imagining of the story of the ill-fated vessel takes a significant departure from the movie.
In ‘Titanique,’ the timeless and tragic love story between Jack and Rose is told through the eyes of the one-and-only French Canadian superstar songstress, Celine Dion, played to perfection by Marney McQueen.
The show features a selection of classic Dion songs, including ‘I’m Alive,’ ‘Because You Loved Me,’ and, of course, ‘My Heart Will Go On.’ This audacious and at times risqué production sharply yet affectionately parodies the melodramatic excesses of its source material. Audiences are reintroduced to alternate versions of the film’s main characters, including Cal, the Unsinkable Molly Brown, and even Victor Garber, which will make it hard to watch ‘Titanic’ with a straight face again.
One of ‘Titanique’s’ standout features is its playful and clever use of pop culture references. Films, music, other Broadway shows, and reality TV all get lampooned, with a special treat for fans of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race.’
The show benefits immensely from its talented cast, who deliver both comically and vocally. McQueen is hilarious and adorable as Celine Dion, while Stephen Anderson brings ‘Mommie Dearest’ levels of high-camp ferocity to the role of Rose’s mother,
Ruth Dewitt-Bukater.
"For those seeking an unforgettable evening of irreverent comedy and expertly performed musical theatre, be sure to book a berth on this ship. ‘Titanique’ is must-see."
