The Jungle Book
Review by Dwayne Lennox
Continuing their recent trend of turning their animated classics into live-action films (see last year's Cinderella, and the upcoming releases of Pete's Dragon and Beauty and the Beast), Disney have turned their sites — and CGI magic — on Rudyard Kipling's tale, The Jungle Book.
Directed by Jon Favreau (Iron-man; Chef), this retelling of the story of an orphaned boy, Mowgli (newcomer Neel Sethi), raised by animals in the jungle boasts an all-star voice cast: Scarlett Johansson, Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong'o, and Bill Murray (as the scene-stealing bear, Baloo).
And this stunning looking film (the CGI animals and landscape are impressively real; you won't believe it was mostly shot in an office building in downtown LA) will enthrall all-ages, introducing a whole new generation to this beloved tale; perhaps even have them seeking out Disney's 1967 animated version (although other than The Bare Necessities, Favreau's film is notably without the musical numbers ).
Youngsters may also be inspired to seek out Kipling's series of Jungle books, which given the box office success of this film, could also find their way onto the big screen in the very near future.

The Jungle Book is a 2016 American adventure film directed and co-produced by Jon Favreau, written by Justin Marks and produced by Walt Disney Pictures. Based on Rudyard Kipling's eponymous collective works and inspired by Walt Disney's 1967 animated film of the same name, The Jungle Book is a live-action/CGI film that tells the story of Mowgli, an orphaned human boy who, guided by his animal guardians, sets out on a journey of self-discovery while evading the threatening Shere Khan. The film introduces Neel Sethi as Mowgli and also features the voices of Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Lupita Nyong'o, Scarlett Johansson, Giancarlo Esposito and Christopher Walken.
Favreau, Marks and producer Brigham Taylor developed the film's story as a balance between Disney's animated adaptation and Kipling's original works, adapting elements from both into the film. Principal photography commenced in 2014, with filming taking place entirely in Los Angeles. The film required extensive use of computer-generated imagery to portray the animals and settings.
The Jungle Book was released in North America in Disney Digital 3-D, RealD 3D, IMAX 3D, D-Box, and premium large formats, on April 15, 2016. It became a critical and commercial success, grossing over $955 million, making it the third highest-grossing film of 2016.
