From Robert Zemeckis, Academy Award-winning director of Forrest Gump, as well as Flight and Cast Away, comes an intense, seductive thriller starring Oscar winners Brad Pitt (World War Z, Inglorious Bastards) and Marion Cotillard (Assassin’s Creed, Two Days, One Night).
Set against the backdrop of World War II in French Morocco, Pitt and Cotillard play two of the world’s deadliest spies who fall in love while undercover on enemy lines. It is Casablanca, 1942. Allied counter intelligence agent Max (Pitt) assumes the identity of husband to famous French resistance spy, Marianne (Cotillard), who is also working undercover. The pair effortlessly poses as a married couple while covertly colluding to assassinate a German diplomat.
After the dangerous North African mission is over, they renounce their espionage days, marry and relocate to lead a quieter life in England. The pressures of war threaten their relationship as evidence comes to light that Marianne may be secretly conspiring with the enemy. When Max learns his wife is likely a Nazi spy, he has only 72-hours to prove her innocence and save his family before he has to do the unthinkable.
Allied also stars Lizzie Caplan (TV's Masters of Sex) as Bridget, the lesbian sister of Pitt's character. And playing Caplan's onscreen lover is Charlotte Hope. "I play a character called Louise, who is Bridget’s girlfriend and she’s Polish and I think she’s very bohemian. I imagine that she’s come to London. . . social mores are kind of by the wayside, and she’s allowed to do whatever with whomever she wants, and so she’s in a relationship with a girl in a time where that would probably not be allowed if it weren’t wartime, but because the bombs are falling, no one cares. So everything’s very heightened."
What makes Allied unique and different from what we’re used to seeing these days? "Ooohhh, um, I think what makes it refreshing is it feels like a really modern story and it doesn’t feel like a period drama. I think a lot of the time in cinema at the moment, you get period dramas that feel like perfume adverts and actually I think this is much more of a, it has more, more heart and more depth to it than that, yeah."
The intricately woven story by Zemeckis of two star-crossed lovers entangled in enemy lines revisits the romantic espionage genre of eras gone with an immensely mesmerizing and smoldering chemistry from Pitt and Cotillard. Be swept up in the intense race against time that tests the limits of one man’s love for his family against that of his country in Allied.
Allied is available to own 4K Ultra HD™, Blu-ray™ & DVD from 26 April, 2017.
